Friends Sitting on the Porch

The Lost Art of Porch Sitting

March 27, 20251 min read

Remember when people used to sit on porches just to... sit?

No scrolling. No multitasking. Just a glass of iced tea (or lemonade if you were fancy), a slow breeze, and a nod to every neighbor walking by.

Porch sitting wasn’t about productivity—it was about presence. It was how we checked in on each other without texting. How we waved, chatted, shared garden cuttings, and occasionally solved the world’s problems before dinner.

These days, it feels like porches are mostly decorative. We build them, photograph them, and then head inside to stream something instead. But maybe it’s time to bring them back—not as furniture showcases, but as community spaces.

Even if you don’t have a porch, you’ve probably got a step, a stoop, a patch of front yard, or even a window with a view. Use it. Say hello. Be visible. Be a part of the slow, quiet, ordinary life happening right outside your front door.

In a world that feels fast, fragile, and full of noise, a simple porch sit might be the most radical thing you can do.

P.S. If you catch me on mine, come say hi. No appointment needed.
