What’s in a Name? A Love Letter to Bowiezens Everywhere

May 27, 20252 min read

It started as a joke.

One day, while chatting with a neighbor about life in Bowie, I said something like, “Well, we Bowiezens have to stick together.”
We both laughed—and then paused.

Bowiezens.
It was quirky. It was catchy. It stuck.

Since then, it’s become more than a nickname. It’s a badge of honor. A little wink. A reminder that we belong to something—a city, a culture, a community that’s uniquely ours.

Because living in Bowie isn’t just about zip codes and street names. It’s about waving at someone you don’t know because you might know them. It's about that one gas station you’ll always go out of your way for. It's about knowing which farmers market stand has the good peaches and which back road to avoid during school pickup.

It's about spending Sunday mornings at Bowie Farmers Market, held at Bowie High School, picking up fresh produce and baked goods. It's about joining a Zumba class or a memoir-writing workshop at the Bowie Senior Center, a vibrant hub offering over 40 in-person classes each week for adults aged 55 and over. It's about taking a leisurely stroll around the lake at Allen Pond Park, an 85-acre park featuring a 0.7-mile loop trail that's perfect for a quick escape into nature. It's about exploring the miles of walking and biking trails that weave through our city. And for the foodies, it's about discovering new culinary delights at places like Shantoo Togetherness, a Caribbean restaurant offering a unique blend of Southern and Caribbean cuisine, or Milk & Honey, a vibrant Southern-inspired restaurant known for its rich, exciting flavors.

As a 55+ foodie who loves fresh produce, am down with the crowd at the Senior Center and can never get enough of nature, this is my jam!

And that’s what MargeauLand is all about. It’s where you don’t have to live in the neighborhood to be part of the community.

If you do live here—well then, welcome, fellow Bowiezen. You’re in good company.
